A lot came true, it would seem - talk about a lot of spam! Security became a definite issue as well, with some companies even locking down access to MSN Web Messenger access. Personal Firewalls became a reality with Windows XP Service Pack 2 as well as pop-blockers (which some say caused even more confusion)! Finally, despite sincere attempts to make metadata everywhere, including the Microsoft Office System, its debateable if it helped people organize their information any better...

Without a doubt, the keyword for last year was SECURITY: USB flash drives stealing information, WiFi networks getting hacked (although Bluetooth sort of died-out before it could even become a network to hack) - did anyone get their mobile phone hacked? Though this article is old (from the tech boom of the 90's), the lessons apply more now than ever: it promotes a healthy attitude toward career management. That is, you're responsible for it:

Start by defining yourself as a product. What functionality do you provide? Do you write code? Analyze requirements and define specifications? Troubleshoot thorny network problems? Work with company management to link technology and organizational strategy?

What differentiates you from your competitors -- everyone else looking for the same job title? Are you exceptionally reliable? Hard working? Innovative and ingenious?

What bugs need fixing? Do you have a tendency to procrastinate? Drop the ball on critical tasks? Misunderstand ambiguous assignments without helping to clarify them? Remember, there's no such thing as a bug-free human.

What enhancements do you want to incorporate into the next release? Do you want to become more diplomatic? Delegate more effectively, or at all? Use object-oriented programming tools? Manage time better?

Also see the Empowerment Zone, for article such as Marketing Yourself for Employment and Guidelines for consultants (presented in an outline form.)

Microsoft Windows Mobile Solutions Partner Program

Microsoft Windows Mobile Solutions Partner Program (WMSPP) is offering the WMSPP Ultimate Developer Package Sweepstakes - register now and enter!

Related links: Using Windows XP Embedded and Windows Embedded Family Tutorials

Small & Medium-Size Business Seminar Registration Form

Intel and PC Magazine/Ziff Davis hosts a Small & Medium-Size Business Seminar, addressing technology for business today...

Digital Subscription to Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine

A complimentary digital subscription to MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional) Magazine, if you have a MCP identification number. Here are seven of those lessons:

One big hit does not ensure another: One fast victory often leads to many subsequent failures. Too often, entrepreneurs figure they have the golden touch -- and rush to create their next big thing without thinking it through...But then they can't do it again, and the failures can leave entrepreneurs and others wondering whether the early victory was pure luck, or whether they really have what it takes to achieve long-term success.
Some experts say the problem is a loss of focus. Other experts say people often press to come up with new ideas instead of letting their creative juices flow, thereby sometimes stifling their creativity.

Succeding in a new business can mean abandoning skills that worked the first time around

Expanding a business doesn't always equal success

Sometimes, succeeding can mean changing your definition a success

Success isn't always a matter of dollars and cents

An entrepreneur's failures can be a powerful motivator

Sucess and the attention it brings can be paralyzing

Speaking of success

...

Fortune: Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's Memo to Employees

Fortune magazine publishes Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's Memo to Employees, outlining the future direction for Microsoft...

.NET Compact Framework Book Review Site

.NET Compact Framework Book Review Site houses content by authors Paul Yao and David Durant. It is also changing the way we manage our careers, market ourselves, explore new career opportunities, network and connect with search firms.

Wherever you are on the techno-power curve, two fundamentals apply to your career: WHAT YOU DO is the product that you market. HOW YOU DO IT, with a little help from technology, is your means to leverage your value AND gain revenues from the marketplace. An invaluable and powerful tool is your own, personal Web page, or "WhatIDo.com" !

Creating your own, personal Web site is less a technical challenge than a good business decision. Management guru Tom Peters talks of professionals being responsible for "The Brand Called You." Future-thinker Bill Bridges notes "The DEJobbing of America." Outsourcing is increasing in the corporate world, along with the "WEB-O-Lution," a spiraling growth of Internet access and usage.

If our future is one of a global economy comprised of countless "free-agent workers," consultants, and entrepreneurs, then one way of leveraging one's value will be the creation of a personal 24/7 storefront to bring one's services to the market. Jerry Yang, co-founder of YAHOO, contends that "…personal publishing represents the next big paradigm shift on the Web."

As an individual professional, you must keep up in a very dynamic way, not simply the old static change model represented by academia and the psychological community. The perfect media for such dynamic "brand positioning" and self-promotion is the Web and your own, personalized site on it.

"WhatIDo.com."

Your personal Web site, a Professional Resume Online (PRO), can "wear several hats."

First, it reflects the dynamic process of your "trends analysis" relative to targeted companies' needs. It also presents your self-assessment relative to your research. Consider a page of SUMMARY paragraphs, each supporting a positioning of choice, complemented by a page full of your accomplishments.
Include an EDUCATION and training page, making your Web site a highly interactive clearinghouse. Create unique resume presentations reflecting a good fit with an employer's needs. Each assessment-oriented page can be kept current with your actual career, as a dynamic "document in process."

Secondly, reflect your current RESEARCH through hyperlinks, narrative summations and analytical commentary.

Finally, a NETWORK and communications page serves as your bulletin board to your functional and industrial world. This could be a "by invitation only" page representing your current network, kept two-way in nature by including a "request for information" form or a direct hyperlink to your e-mail address.

Concepts, Ideas, and Tips

FIT HAPPENS… both between you and potential employers AND between your message and how it's received. If your site is not an "authentic" reflection of YOU, it will become apparent quite easily and quickly. As more and more Web sites are created, the "literacy rate" within this media increases. Site visitors quickly turn off to sites that are excessively manipulative in language or presentation.

Your PRO, or Web site, should include what matters to you, personally and professionally, as a conversation starting site.

A Word About Style Issues

Your PRO site should reflect the total you, so self-awareness is essential. Your Web site should FIT you and create the best impression of your capabilities and full potential, as a unique blend of your personal and professional profiles.

There used to be a clear distinction between the personal and professional components of "YOU." Those boundaries become blurred in light of self-employment, entrepreneurism and other lifestyle issues. A Web site actually takes on your personality and reflects your values and interests (all "soft measures" of who you are) in its choice of format, layout, graphic selection and links to other sites.

In the grand scheme of personal marketing strategy, your Web site is another piece of an intricate puzzle. Like your resume, letters, phone conversations, and personal networking, YOUR Web site should generate productive dialogue between you and potential employers or other interested parties. It should contain the basic components that create "the FIT" between you and their needs.

Allow your Web site to BE UNIQUELY YOU. Make your site uniquely you (redundancy intended).

"Web Careering" Through Site Development

The development of your site should be a consistent and constant process. Just like a traditional resume is merely a static reflection of what you've done, a static Web site is merely a snapshot of your past. Instead, YOUR SITE should be a very dynamic one, clearly reflecting your current positioning and future objectives. Make it easy for viewers to see what's changing. While you are a dynamic "work in progress" some fundamentals about you remain constant, and deserve prominent positioning. But don't let your site, yourself, or your development "die" in the eyes of your viewers.
Keep the content and format interesting and current. Choose graphical material wisely.
